Yeah, my whole point with "symbol" was to say that NLP seemed like a weirdly narrow focus for generating AI's which can communicate in a conscious manner, which you already explained for me, i think, in that the humans want to know if it can communicate too, but wouldn't language (here defined simply as a set of symbols to indicate meaning when perceived by some sense) be detectable on some level even if you didnt know the words?
egyptian hieroglyphs, for example, were probably obvious as a language before the rosetta stone got found, even if there was no kernel of meaning to jumpstart the whole ecosystem.
