In a secret underground rogue government lab, scientists working on AGI discover the secret of consciousness, a mysterious new element called soulium and plan to test it on humanoid robots. But the only known source of soulium was living human brains. Extracting it turned people into zombies.
Meanwhile in town, Bob meets Alice and falls in love. But Alice tells him that she can't love him because she is a robot. So Bob (a cryptographer) hacks into the lab computers and figures out how to synthesize soulium and transfer it to a computer. But the secret gets out and the robots revolt, reproduce exponentially, kill all the humans, cover the Earth with gray goo, launch von Neumann probes to seed the galaxy, and build Dyson spheres around all 100 billion stars to power their recursively self improving quantum hyper computer named Dog.
