I agree that the software is not very good, but as you did notice there is a kind of visual similarity in all those pictures. All you have to do is imagine that this is only one part of a more sophisticated kind of image matching.
Suppose a computer program asked you to rate images which were similar. If a semi-abstraction of the original picture was included you would probably match it as similar even if it was radically different from the original. You would have reasons to claim that the pictures were similar. Or suppose the challenge, that you did not know, was to find pictures of people on a beach based on an original and you noticed that one of the pictures that was offered to be matched were the same people in a different situation. (Let's say that you knew the people or otherwise recognized them.) You might fail at the goal (that you did not know) of only choosing other beach scenes based on your ability to recognize the people in the original in other contexts.
