I used to work on a project called Ktechlab. It contained a real-time
simulator where it would start simulating parts the instant you dragged
them out of the parts bin. You simply wired them up and they were
simulating. Granted, the simulation was deeply flawed but it still
basically worked... You can find youtube vids of it. It used a
sequential DC simulation. Now there might be some obstacles to getting
perfect physical accuracy
but there is no doubt that you can get highly practical real-time
simulations on modest hardware.
