This article goes wrong in two places: 1. Congress is in control. The writer obviously thinks they are. 2. Many, or most religions already have had a "transhumanist" element, that is leaving the body in the afterlife for example.
Contemporarily created religions naturally will have the "afterlife" more practically spec'd out, for example if you wanna go Linux or Windows, be cross-platform or whatever. The soul might be an RFC and have XML web services interface. We might celebrate the birth of Sergey Brin and create a high-tech digital hell where your mind upload is tortured if you do wrong, like for example being forced to watch Bucky and Pepito reruns while listening to Leonard Cohen for 1000 years.
