My Vis5D system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vis5D) for visualizing weather simulations was written in a mix of Fortran and C (1988), the Fortran being legacy code from previous systems dating back to the early 1970s. We gradually replaced the Fortran with C, except for the "stub" programs we supplied to help scientists read their file formats into our system (I suspect that some are still using Fortran to convert data).

Here's an idea - let's re-spec Fortran to do better 3D graphics rendering and real-time physics simulation so people can use it to write video games. The question is why? Perhaps to migrate existing developers? Better to create a whole new language IMO. John
