I wonder if the high resolution rendering of Skyrim or something similar is 
really a necessity.
You could actually build a very complex and dynamic virtual world without that 
high realism.
If your goal is to have a simulation to train an AGI, might be that all it 
needs is it's own laws that can be deduct or infer and sufficient hierarchical 
emerging properties to makes things complex enough and interesting enough.
The sensory input doesn't have to be visual.
I'd even dare to say (To quote the previous link on Deepmind progress) that if 
your AI is general enough, once it understood it's virtual reality that is way 
off ours, the same program should be able to perform well in learning our 
reality.
Just my 2 cents of course.
