AGI will also be constraint by scarcity of resource, at least in the beginning. That resource is computation power, just because you get the source code doesn't mean you can run it, or run it fastenough to matter. If the first AGI can only be run in real time on 10,000 GPU clusters, then open source its code would just give power to the rich and stupid, a very dangerous combination.

There are no logical inconsistencies in advocating open-source AI.

Nukes are a bad analogy. They are controlled largely via scarcity of needed raw materials. But if AGI can be implemented on standard digital computers, this sort of control does not exist....

Musk's conclusion, which I agree with, is that the odds of keeping AGI safe via

a) doing a mediocre job of safe AGI design and trying (and probably failing) to keep one's AGI system secret

are lower than the odds of keeping AGI safe via

b) having a really good design for safe AGI, even if publicly known

...

and he is betting that b) will be best achieved via having the world at large pursue AGI, rather than having AGI pursued secretly by gov't labs or big for-profit companies only...

Part of the reasoning behind a) is that keeping software designs secret in the modern era is pretty damn unlikely....

The argument is one of balancing probabilities that we cannot know very well at the moment, but I don't think it's inconsistent or illogical...

AI superpowers, well we already have spellcheckers which make

accuracy, efficiency and access to knowledge people and money

I also agree that it is a limited view to constrain to human

The habitable zone can encompass all planets, if we accept AGI
