For the most part I agree with you (at least, until narrow-AI technology
becomes more common in commercial apps). I do, however, think that a lot of
people take this as an excuse to just write everything themselves. In
particular, I've noticed people tend to invent their own network protocols,
database systems, and other basic building blocks despite the fact that in
most cases they would be better off just buying a commercial product. IMHO
this is a complete waste of effort - an AI team should spend as much of its
time as possible solving AI problems, not trying to optimize their file IO.
