This topic was discussed in this list (?) before, and as far as I can
remember, several people (including me) argued for the necessity of
some kind of sleeping and dreaming in AGI systems.

My own system (NARS, http://nars.wang.googlepages.com/) hasn't reached
that stage yet, though I'm quite sure that when the system becomes
complicated enough, it will need to "sleep" (though not necessarily in
a 24-hour cycle). During that period, the input/output threshold is
raised ("eyes" closed ...) and the processes are deactivated, though
some of them will still go on, and often follow less established
paths, because of the lessening of resources competition.
