Depends on what you mean by "basic" -- There is a demonstration that
classifies extremely simplified line drawings, which include dog and
cat.

The prototype dog has a neck and legs, but the prototype cat has neither. Both
consist of 10 or so lines.

The point as I understand it has more to do with shift, scale, and other invariances
than the inherent catness or dogness of the line drawings.

Hawkins's work is pretty interesting but it's a ways away from being impressive yet IMO.
