I got the impression from the recent interesting thread re vision that the surface of the retina may be especially designed so as to "re-distort" that distorted retinal image back into the proper shape we actually see.

A robotics friend, however, who is very into the visual cortex, insisted that "the mappings into "all" visual areas are very distorted", and therefore that idea was wrong.
