Personally I would like to see AIs which can operate in the "real" world outside of a factory environment, and so for me there is really no way to dodge the perception issue by confining my systems to a limited universe of discourse. However, I concede that animal-like or human-like intelligence where visual imagery and spatial reasoning plays a significant role may be just an insignificant data point at the unfashionable end of mind design space. It is possible to imagine AGIs which are quite non-human whose perception consists of web pages, VoIP and RSS feeds.
Most perception problems, such as visual processing and SLAM, boil down to the same generic problems which apply across all subfields of AI - searching efficiently through a very high dimensional space where the data available may be only partial and subject to some degree of uncertainty. The DP-SLAM algorithm which I'm using at present for example is really just a fancy kind of tree search, and it's quite likely that it could be rewritten within an AGI framework such as OpenCog. 2008/4/25 a <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > So far, the debate arguing whether "perception" is required for AGI is based > on definitional conflicts. > > It is obvious that it is necessary to have some visual or spatial > representation format to manipulate and understand visual images (regardless > if the representation format is learned or emulated or hard coded).
