Charles:Sensory data would be more
significant, but there's considerable evidence that even sensory data has a
hard time in overruling a strong model belief.

That's a really good point. Both individuals' and social groups' willingness to change their models in the light of the evidence, has a great deal to do with factors like the availability of alternative models, and the labour involved of revising models - and not just the evidence. People accordingly cling to paradigms that defy huge amounts of evidence, or have little to no evidence - like the behaviourist black box paradigm, or religious paradigms - rather than rethink them, or be faced with mystery. They do this not just formally, intellectually, but also with models of individuals - like a spouse refusing to accept considerable evidence that their partner has been unfaithful.
