I have thought about this problem for some time before (it's known as "categorization" in the cognitive psychology literature).
Some good books are: The Big Book of Concepts Women, Fire and Dangerous Things A satisfactory solution of it may be not be that simple. I'll try to offer one solution in my paper, but I'm still working on it....
