I think we're all on the same page - and I figured these were
suggestions, not requirements. I guess I was just discussing it the
long way around - sorry.

Ant. Right now, the Xalan distro includes xerces.jar, ant.jar, and a
number of other conveniences, making recompiling it (including docs and
distros) completely self-contained. Obviously plain end users simply
stick a bunch of our .jars into the classpath and just run us - no big
diff there. I'm hoping that this makes it a little easier for the
users who want to play with something in our codebase, or want to write
their own extension to Xalan, etc., to then be able to recompile their
work and Xalan as-is, without ever having to refer to anything else
besides our distro unit.

Minor convenience, but I think it's worth it to our team to do the
extra work of maintaining these files. And actually the degree of
convenience depends on the community you're talking about. To most
listeners (and I bet all writers) on this alexandria-dev list, this is
just about moot. But to random humans who use computers to run Java
who happen along to a *.apache.org site, little things like this make
it easier for them to get their feet wet and start out in this world.

So I tend to be a big fan of worthwhile standards, so I hope to
eventually update our build.xml file to use the same property names
that you all come up with for your 'suggested default' build.xml file
for jakarta (I've already added most of the default targets). That way
we can all have our cake and eat it too!
