AFAiK the 20 degree 'step' in the caliper pistons (and orientation in said step) is for anti-squeal purposes.

I always put the pistons in the 'proper' way, but honestly doubt it makes much difference.

But, what do I know ... I've only been doing this for about 28 years or so now ... Yikes

I don't know if that's an anti-squeal thing, a pad wear thing, or a piston retraction thing, but if you're having problems, it's probably worth paying attention to.
