Hi Skip,

Is the head bound up on gunk on the studs? (Sounds like it is).

Tough as it might sound, I think your best bet might be to clean the studs as
much as you can between the head and the block, then lower the head back down.
Hopefully, when you raised the head you pushed some gunk up on the studs, and
that's where it's binding. Perhaps lowering the head back down will expose
that, then you can clean off the studs above the head and try it all again.

Also, you already know this, but the head needs to be raised completely even.
If it's cocked at all, it will bind.

HTH,

bs

Subject: [alfa] (Alfa) 2 liter head removal

Hi all,
I have a 2 liter Alfa Engine that someone sealed up with Permatex the last
time it was apart. I got the engine out of a wrecked junk car a few years ago
so I don't know the history on it. I am trying to get the head off so I can
use it to repair a Spider with a cracked head and then use the block to repair
a GTV with a spun bearing.
Anyhow, the head refuses to come off. Yes, the two bolts in the front are
out and all the head nuts are off and I have made PB Blaster rich ;-) I have
rope in the two end cylinders, two Alfa head removal tools installed and
tight, put a hydraulic jack on the block webs and had them pushing up on the
intake and exhaust ports all at the same time and using a nylon strap have the
engine hanging by the head from a hoist. By beating with a bfh on the Alfa
Tools and keeping pressure on everything else I have managed to get the head
to the top of the studs and installed spacers between the studs and the tool
but it refuses to go any farther. I even took my torch and put heat on the
studs today still to no avail. I am almost at the point of cutting the studs
and then removing them one at a time with a press.
Does anyone have any more ideas that I haven't tried already? Thanks
