Skip,
Is the head coming up square to the studs? Measure the gap between head and
block at the front and rear to give you some idea.
If it's not square, remove most of your .... tools.. and try pushing the
head back down slightly on the high end/side. Then, try again with the
pullers alone. If this fails then I'd do as you suggested and cut the
studs. Try to cut them as high as possible to make removing them from the
block a little easier.

Subject: [alfa] (Alfa) 2 liter head removal
Hi all,
I have a 2 liter Alfa Engine that someone sealed up with Permatex the
last
time it was apart. I got the engine out of a wrecked junk car a few years
ago
so I don't know the history on it. I am trying to get the head off so I
can
use it to repair a Spider with a cracked head and then use the block to
repair
a GTV with a spun bearing.
Anyhow, the head refuses to come off. Yes, the two bolts in the front
are
out and all the head nuts are off and I have made PB Blaster rich ;-) I
have
rope in the two end cylinders, two Alfa head removal tools installed and
tight, put a hydraulic jack on the block webs and had them pushing up on
the
intake and exhaust ports all at the same time and using a nylon strap have
the
engine hanging by the head from a hoist. By beating with a bfh on the
Alfa
Tools and keeping pressure on everything else I have managed to get the
head
to the top of the studs and installed spacers between the studs and the
tool
but it refuses to go any farther. I even took my torch and put heat on
the
studs today still to no avail. I am almost at the point of cutting the
studs
and then removing them one at a time with a press.
Does anyone have any more ideas that I haven't tried already? Thanks
