Ding, ding, we have the correct answer below.
Most likely the contacts in the solenoid are shot. You can try
cleaning them, which might work for awhile, but since you have to
remove the statrter to do so, I'd just replace the solenoid.

is nothing but a solenoid click. By the 3rd or 4th time,

If the solenoid is clicking, then that means that all of the
electrics are okay to that point. And since the starter works, then
I'd suggest the only thing left is the starter contacts inside of
the solenoid. They could be either dirty or shot.
When the solenoid is energized, it pushes the starter gear into the
ring gear, closing two contacts that energize the starter when it
reaches full deflection. So I'd say that either the solenoid might
be gummed up and not deflecting all the way, or the starter contacts
are bad.
