Stevan:
I have the older giant starter (with brace kit now) that
takes the non-stock ring gear for my year. Recently, when
turning the key to start, the first one or two times there
is nothing but a solenoid click. By the 3rd or 4th time,
it usually starts as normal. Sometimes, it's completely normal.
If the solenoid is clicking, then that means that all of the electrics are
okay to that point. And since the starter works, then I'd suggest the only
thing left is the starter contacts inside of the solenoid. They could be
either dirty or shot.
When the solenoid is energized, it pushes the starter gear into the ring
gear, closing two contacts that energize the starter when it reaches full
deflection. So I'd say that either the solenoid might be gummed up and not
deflecting all the way, or the starter contacts are bad.
