generally thats the symtem of what we call here the "automat".which is
actually the solinoid which sits on the top of the starter and is connected by
one larger wire to the main body and yet a secound smaller wire is connected
to it with a shovel connecter from where it goes to another remote solinoid
and from there to your switch.inside this thingy is a electro magnet with
contacts.when the key is turned the electro magnet is energized a spring
engages the starter gear to the flywheel ring.these contacts corrode after a
while and thats one fault that causes that symtem.after all these words i've
written it all comes down to rebuild your starter.

Hi Stevan,

I also have a 73 Berlina with the same starter set up as you and have the
exact same starter oddity. So far it has always eventually started, but
sometimes does take a few turns of the key with nothing but a click.

Next time I go out to the shop [likely this weekend] I was going to start
cleaning everything in the electrical path between the ignition and the
starter and see if that had any effect. I'll let you know what happens.

ring gear for my year. Recently, when turning the key to start, the first one
or two times there is nothing but a solenoid click. By the 3rd or 4th time, it
usually starts as normal. Sometimes, it's completely normal.
