I agree with Ira and the foreign matter and the electrolysis. If you have
the capacity, try heating the bolts red hot. The iron/steel expands and
contracts at a different rate than the iron oxide and other matter, this tends
to break it up. I have used the "rope trick" to lock the crank on an Audi
engine that was still in the car, the purpose being to loosen the crank nut.
No apparent damage. I am not sure that this would have freed a head, all a
question of the amount of leverage you could apply. I suppose the best
you could get would be two pistons pushing. For some reason, nylon rope is
recommended.
All of this reminds me of the old Mercedes Gull Wings. Iron block, copper
gasket and aluminum head. Those heads came off with a chisel and a BFH.
