Thank you all for your replies. The Interstate guys gave both the
battery and the alternator a thumbs up.
What I'd like to know is if it is possible an alternator can be designed
(or in this case, rebuilt) so that it keeps the voltage in a pretty
small range - kicking in fairly quickly when the voltage drops not all
that much, and cuts the charging again, not all that much over, say, the
13.87v figure?
Both the alt I just removed and this one are what is used in the later
Spiders and the 3.0 MIlano. I don't recall the alt light ever going out
as quickly as it, ahem, currently is.
One small thing is that a FM station I like, a low wattage jazz station
in Long Beach (about 35-40 miles as the crow flies from me) is no longer
coming in as clearly. It was always a bit iffy clarity wise, but today
sounded very iffy.
Five years ago I bugged you all as to how important the 'extra' gizmo on
the back of alts is, the one that is screwed in and its short wire
plugged in to the back - as opposed to being built in. Consensus varied,
but in any event Joe Elliot kindly offered to have his folks take one
off an alt he had in their basement and send it to me. Not at all sure
if it made a difference but later after installing a NOS 70's Hirshmann
electric antenna, the station came in.
What I'm leading up to is I failed to put my/Joe's on, since this
rebuilt came with one. Is it remotely possible these gizmos have any
indirect control of FM interference or lack thereof? I put the rear air
scoop on without checking and it is a pita to remove and replace it
since the compressor's hoses (just below the alt) make it a major ordeal.
