Just stuff some clothes line down the spark plug hole and turn the engine over by hand to bring the piston up to compress it against the valves. You can do this to two cylinders at a time, but be careful to keep track of the timing chain. If you do use the air method, be sure to remove the starter and lock down the flywheel. If you don't lock the engine it will turn violently when you apply air until the piston travels to the bottom of the stroke. This can make a mess of the timing chain if it gets balled up on the gear.
