David,

To elaborate a little on what George has written: I think the mounting
surface you are referring to is on the back of the front cover on the lower
right-hand side, correct? The fuel pump doesn't mount directly to the cover.
There is a small casting that mounts to the cover and serves as the mounting
boss for the pump. This casting angles the pump away from the block and
carries one of the two push rod sections George mentioned. The other rod
fits into the hole in the front cover and, as he said, is actuated off an
eccentric on the oil pump/distributor drive. That rod acts on the end of the
rod in the mounting boss, which in turn acts on the lever in the fuel pump.
There is also a thick fiber spacer that fits between the mounting boss and
the pump. If you have access to a parts manual, take a look and you'll see
what I mean. As far as I know, all 101 and 105 series blocks, at least
through to the introduction of SPICA injection, made this same accommodation
for a manual pump. Models that came with an electric pump used a block-off
plate. I believe the 750 series engines had a different mounting entirely
but they were all 1300's.

Good luck with your project.

David, in the Euro-style 1750 engine that I'm using in my Spider Jr. there
were two rod sections between the fuel pump and an eccentric on the
distributor shaft.

Have another look at the boss on the 1600 block and see if there is an
opening pointing up and forward toward the area of the front cover where the
distributor shaft resides.

FWIW some Giulias came with electric fuel pumps and may have deleted this
feature within the front cover. I'm just speculating on that.
