Thanks to all that replied. Turns out Ira and Brian were right. They face rearward. I think John was looking at the wrong set of bolts in the picture. After the cross member rose up to position, the clearance was fine. And feeding the the bolts in from behind is very difficult since the clutch housing fans out there as Brian mentions.
