------- Additional comments from [email protected] Sat Apr 24 15:52:31 +0000 2010 ------- I am mainly considering the English language (UK, US, and others). Conventions of these punctuation rules vary for each of the localities but also within each locality. On a similar thought, regardless of the language or locality in question, if the rules were updated to my suggestion, would this matter (I am honestly not sure)? With these rules, the use of the hyphen/dash characters would be more explicit in that the user would be able to choose which one they want based on the number of "-"s. For spacing, if the user places a space, there would be a space. If the user does not place a space, there would be no space. I feel this would be a more flexible approach so that a user can use these characters more fluidly and freely. Otherwise, I find that the auto-correction functionality seems to force possible non-conventional uses of these punctuations and I find myself and others end up fighting it instead of appreciating it. Currently, If I type in a numerical range, say 23--27, I get: 23<em>27. For most US conventions, this should be: 23<en>27 instead. The following paragraph in a wikipedia article sites a few english language conventions and explains common usage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dash#En_dash_versus_em_dash Based on the variety of conventions for even the same languages and localities, I argue that it would be easier to give the user an easier way to more explicitly say "I want this character here" for the hyphen/dash. I hope this makes sense, Thanks! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
