Bob, about Lomatium cous:
If someone had shown me this name, and I was in a shoot-from-the-hip mood, I might have incorrectly jumped to the conclusion that the cous was the masculine form of the Latin geographic term for the island Cos (as in Cyclamen coum). But then I would have noticed the seeming discrepancy between the gender of the genus and the seeming gender of the species name. But since cous in this case is based on a person's name, and in the combination Lomatium cous is used as a noun in apposition and not an adjectival (and thus declined) species name, there is no lack of agreement. But back to Cyclamen coum: it "should" be pronounced as a two syllable word, co-um, even though cous and coum sound like kissing cousins. Jim McKenney
