Well, scratch Monticello from my list of reasons to visit the East.
Not so fast. One reason to visit is the dogwoods. There are a lot of
named cultivars, but very few in commerce. Jefferson was a collector and
he obviously loved /Cornus florida/. During the second and third weeks
of April the Monticello driveway is a fantasy grove of selections. I
have not heard of a matching collection.
As a gardener Jefferson was a meticulous diarist, the cost of plants and
seeds all enumerated. Enumerated but never added up. Like some 21st
century gardeners he never reconciled his avarice and his bank account.
He left his survivors with more debts than assets.
