As a gardener Jefferson was a meticulous diarist, the cost of plants
and seeds all enumerated. Enumerated but never added up. Like some
21st century gardeners he never reconciled his avarice and his bank
account. He left his survivors with more debts than assets.

Apparently Jefferson tried a lot of odds and ends. One of his
more interesting is the tropical annual hibiscus Pentapetes phoenicea
And Monticello sells seeds of this and many others.
