Hello Jane, Last year I successfully germinated 1 out of 10 Castilleja miniata seeds obtained from the SRGC seed exchange. I sowed them on combo of starter mix and grit, just covered with granite grit, gave them outdoor treatment (we did get some days of freezing), in a tray with a vented dome over it. The 1 seedling was well up by May 15th. I planted it out in the garden about a month later when it had good root growth and some good leaf growth, in a sunny dry bed with a Penstemon davidsonii x menziesii that likes the same. It was doing well, enjoying our dry summer, new leaves growing slowly, but unfortunately the deer liked it too and nipped off most of the top in late summer. No sign of a resurgence in the fall and right now it is covered in snow. I will be interested to see if it comes up again and is happy or if it succumbed. Sincerely, Valerie Melanson
