Hi Nehal, thanks for getting back to me on this.

go into the first mixer item (master) in alsamixer and press 'm' , this
will unmute it (it can be muted even though the volume can be changed,)
do the same for 'pcm', and also make sure 'wave' is somewhere around
half way up, then try again...

OK, I ran alsamixer, unmuted all the channels, including master, pcm and
wave, and pushed them up to maximum. I then ran aplay to play one of the
.wav files in /usr/share/sounds. Still no sound. (One thing which I did
notice, however, which might be significant. One of the faders near the
extreme right of the alsamixer display is "SBLive analogue/digital
output jack". The fader wouldn't move, but if I toggled the muting
on/off, there was a pop from the speakers.)

Are you using digital speakers? is so try analog speakers and see if that
make a difference..

if that works and u want to use digital,
u probably need to change extin/extout values

try loading the module like this:

   modprobe snd-emu10k1 extin="0x0003" extout="0x1f0f"

and try again... (you can find this info in ALSA-Configuration.txt)
