Well, the "MP3+" actually does have mixer controls (some USB devices
don't).

What is the output of "amixer -c X controls", where X is the card
number (see /proc/asound/cards)?

The MP3+'s descriptors are the same AFAICS; cliff has different root
hub information because he has a different chipset in his computer.
