The patches are both designed to solder into the board in the same way and are about the same size. It's the fact that the TeleMetrum circuit board is narrower (the ground plane is in the board geometry) that causes the issue. There are probably any number of "hacks" you could try to improve GPS performance with a different antenna. Feel free to experiment as long as you understand we can't be responsible for the results!
