The first place to look is /tmp/amanda/amindexd*debug on the server.

I would recommend it.  For one thing, a very common reason for the above
error gets logged properly with the newest code.  That may or may not
be what is wrong in your case, but if it is, it will be much easier to
see in the debug file.

I don't understand.  If you get a new tar file, I'd recommend working in
a new directory.  Don't untar it over the top of your current build area.
