Actually I thought I saw a post on here before that
you can, in newer versions, backup to disk.  Also, on
sourceforge there is a utility called "backuppc"

It looks to be a disk-only solution, it might be
useful for you, not sure. (It has screen shots so you
can see how it works).

Also, There is another tool (afbackup) on sourceforge
which has a disk-type backup as well.  Hopefully
someone will post how to do it in amanda.
