Just one problem, 3 actually. This is despite the exact same dvd being used for both installs, based on wheezy but with a special "pinned" kernel. 1. some of this stuff is locked down so tight that not even root can look at them. 2. Which "amandahosts" is the operative one, since most recent installs see to have two of these puppies. One in /var/lib/amanda/.amandahosts, and a non-dotted amandahosts someplace semi-random in the /etc tree. 3. The /etc/ amanda related stuff on one machine doesn't exist on the other and vice-versa. But on shop, I had fixed then/var/lib/amanda/.amandahosts file as follows: root@shop:/etc# cat /var/lib/amanda/.amandahosts coyote.coyote.den root amindexd amidxtaped coyote.coyote.den amandabackup amdump coyote.coyote.den amanda amdump However, in /etc/amanda/amandahosts is the entry: root@shop:/etc# cat amandahosts localhost backup Over on the lathe bvox, which works That is likely the cause of the problem. Maybe. I just created an /etc/amanda directory, and touched amanda-client.conf in it then pasted the contents of that file on lathe into it. And by golly, it ran! and I got my data back. But now a problem I will have to take to the LCNC mailing list. Waaay out of bounds for this one. Thanks for the hints Deb, they are appreciated. But I will plead guilty to feeling like going raving mad over the apparently random storage locations for the amandahosts file, with or without the leading dot. When 2 consecutive installs, on identical machines from the same dvd can't agree on where it belongs, how the hell are we supposed to know?
