Okay, progress.

The Debian packages come with /var/backups/.amandahosts as a symlink to
the /etc/amandahosts file:
# ls -l /var/backups/.amandahosts
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 Jul 15 2010 /var/backups/.amandahosts ->
/etc/amandahosts
(where "/var/backups/" comes into play because it is the home directory
of the "backup" user).
Once again, you have a choice now between sticking to the Debian way and
putting back that symlink (and then populating /etc/amandahosts
appropriately), or following more closely the setup on your other
machines with locally-compiled packages (in which case you presumably
would create a symlink pointing to /var/lib/amanda/.amandahosts).
(From your earlier posting it seems that latter file already includes a
line granting permissions to the "amanda" user from coyote).

(Do you mean "lib" instead of "log" in this paragraph? I'd guess the
.amandahosts file doesn't have anything to do with the /var/log directory tree,
even in your current hybrid configuration.... In either case, you can
see from the error message that the amanda process is looking for
/var/backups/.amandahosts , so in any case you'll need to create
something in that spot...)
