Could you explain your concern about multiple volumes?  You would normally set 
up a number of vtapes, and each amanda run would use one or more of them 
depending on the size of the backup for that particular run.  For me I use 20GB 
volumes as it replaced an old DDS4 robot.  I have about 40 in the pool (the NAS 
is 1TB) and each run uses anywhere between 2 and 6 volumes (the largest being 
when one of the client machines' partition get a full, and the smallest when a 
couple of client machines happen to get L2s lining up)
