Dear Ambiteers,

After a long (summer...!) lull in the monthly discussion topics I'd like to introduce the oct/nov topic "art & gaming" to co-incide with the exhibition just opened at the Royal Museum, Edinburgh.

GAME ON - The History and Culture of Video Games
18 October 02 - 2 February 03

An area of increasing interest to artists, it's good to see work such as Triggerhappy by Thomson & Craighead, shown here alongside commercial video games.

To quote some of the publicity blurb:

"Game On is the first major exhibition in Scotland to explore the fascinating past and diverse future of videogames. From the first ever computer game, Spacewar!, made in 1962, right up to the latest not-yet-released products.

With over 120 playable games throughout the exhibition, you can enjoy the best of new and retro games from around the world on vintage arcade cabinets, classic old-skool consoles, the PS2, Xbox and GameCube"

There is also a conference to co-incide with the exhibition:

Game On Conference - Exploring the Potential of Computer Games in Learning
Hosted by Heather Reid
20 - 21 November 2002
Royal Museum Lecture Theatre

And lastly, of related interest is Select Parks, an international archive of computer game art, where you can find works such as untitled game by Jodi (developed from the source of Quake) as shown in the re-opening exhibition at the CCA last year.
