Richard
Thank you for your suggestion. I downloaded both files and installed
them. I found something very queer. By setting *.gz to default to
winzip, and clicking on a .gz file, I could view the contents
delightfully. By invoking wzunzip from a DOS command line, I obtained
the following message:
WinZip(R) Command Line Support Add-On Version 1.0 (Build 3181)
Copyright (c) WinZip Computing, Inc. 1991-2000 - All Rights Reserved
Zip file: d:\webstat2\www.20010101.gz
=====================================
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a Zip file, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part Zip file.
The command line was:
c:\progra~1\winzip\wzunzip -cd d:\webstat2\"www.20010101.gz"
but it is the same with other options and with or without the inverted
commas.
Using the same command line in Start|Run presumably obtained the same
result, but it happened too quickly to read!
If I read this correctly, it means that the file is incorrect in some
way, which may explain why it wouldn't do anything under gzip, either,
from the analog command line. I don't understand why invoking the
unzipping by double clicking on the file icon produced a readable
result, though.
Has anyone any further ideas, as my knowledge of compression could be
written on a very small pinhead. Please????
Best regards
Brian
PS I could send one of the files (about 10 kb) if anyone wished to
examine it.
