First off, the first time you start an AVD after creating it you have to wait a VERY LONG TIME for it to configure itself completely.
Secondly, I have found that, contrary to the docs, the application does not "pop up" of its own accord once loaded, but instead you have to press the Menu (I think) button. This may be something peculiar to my config, but I suspect it's dependent on the particular AVD you choose.
