Peli and Natan,

There are many applications that can be handled directly by using a
Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) that uses an Ethernet interface.
A PLC provides sensor and control interfaces for temperature,
pressure, speed, digital I/O, analog I/O, GPIB, variable motor
drives, .......

A PCMCIA cell phone card in a laptop, with an ethernet cable hooked to
the PLC provides a ready-made hardware system for doing jobs such as
home automation and security, robotic systems, industrial controls and
manufacturing, laboratory equipment and measurement automation, and
anything else where a cell phone might act as the remote interface for
monitor and control of some real world system.

JAUS software development kit (SDK)

Keep in mind that robotics is simply a collection of systems that
collaborate to accomplish tasks. Therefore any robotic subsystem can
be used outside of the robotic environment to accomplish a more
meanial task.

There is sufficient JAUS development to make the Android version a
straight forward task. However, to make the Universal Remote Control
software backward compatible with controls that already exist, drivers
would need to be developed by the manufacturers for their aged
equipment.

As an example: A child's remote control airplane.

There are several remote controls that have an RS-232 interface for
controlling the RF signals sent to the airplane.

Through the use of a simple air pressure sensor, the airplane can be
prevented from crashing. The computer would allow the operator to do
whatever they want, but when a minimum altitude is reached, the
computer takes over and puts the plane into a known safe
configuration.

X-10 Home Automation can be used to implement home based automation.

Virtually all home robotics have communication interfaces.

Even the car companies are introducing standard ports for their
vehicles

A needed secondary application for JAUS is to provide backward
compatiblity for all the specialty remotes previously created. TV,
stereo, DVD, DVR, keychain remote, and any other remote controls can
be mimicked by JAUS through a driver configured for the compatible
port (Infrared and sometimes RF).

I'm sure there is an even broader concept that I have yet to
envision. But this is the beginning of what I have in mind. Keeping
it simple, just port the existing JAUS archetecture into Android, then
begin further development to create standard controls for a few off-
the-shelf products.

At that point, manufacturers can be brought on-board to develop their
own device drivers to have their products compatible with Android.

Once JAUS is ported to Android, 128-bit encryption needs to be
implemented to prevent people from arbitrarily controlling other
people's equipment.
