Pretty sure I tried the setInt(whatevz,"setAlpha",etc... technique when adding optional transparent backgrounds to one of my AppWidgets - didn't work. So I had to opt for making a copy of my base Layout for each background version. Pretty nasty stuff as I've now got 4 versions of base Layout to ammend should I need to ammend the base Layout :/ Whatever it takes, though!
