I argue that this issue is a fundamental trait of the way the android OS is written and operates. By default, a brand new android phone keeps an always-on data connection, and all the Google services are constantly talking via data in "push mode". The iPhone, or a symbian phone, do not initiate a data session unless you specifically do something like open the web browser. When you close it, the data session terminates. Those platforms DO let you run a push email service, which would then keep an always on data connection. But at least the user has to do this themselves, and by default its not this way.
I'm just saying that maybe Google should think about their OS philosophy to understand why android devices get such poor battery life compared to the competition. When I turn off data on my nexus and simulate these other platforms, my battery life sky rockets to normal. Having 7 Google services constantly connected to their servers is a pretty serious battery hit. Then throw in third party apps and forget about it.
