I understand (perhaps incorrectly, since I've never even held an iPhone in my hands) that iPhone apps can't arbitrarily open network connections when in the background - it requires getting the application authorized in some way.
If so, that's the price for Android's openness, since any application can make background data connections. Android 2.0 reduced the potential for abuse somewhat with its tighter background service policy.
What would help is a screen built into the OS that would show traffic stats for individual applications (just like we have for battery use now). Not everyone's cellular plan has unlimited data. Perhaps we'll see something like this some day?
