Probably that's why users rave about battery savings from automation
apps that turn mobile data on/off and/or switch 2G/3G based on
circumstance.

Unfortunately automatic control of mobile data is another battery-
saving possibility that Google views as sacriligeous for some reason
and stamped down on some more in Gingerbread. Similarly GPS toggling
by apps.
