What I did, until I can speak to my programmer, is make it much more clear 
on the app site that you NEED a database for the search engine to work.  So 
far, that seems to help, as the number of downloads has jumped.  It is a 
sort of 'critical mass' situation.  The traction the app gets will depend 
on people in the target market trying it, liking it, and telling two 
friends about it.  Then I hope demand will explode.

My programmer is not as quick to respond as I would like - he works 
full-time for someone else, and only on my project occasionally, when he 
has personal time.  I could mention the link, if anyone is interested.
