How are you trying to do this? I just ran a test with a 6MB MP4 file and it worked just fine. I renamed it to test.db to see if it was perhaps not compressing the MP4 file based on file extension, and that too worked just fine. It works on both the emulator and a G1. It takes a few seconds on the G1, writing to the stock SD card that shipped with it (not sure what class of SD card that is, so some SD cards may be faster or slower).
